Remnants from Residents

Have you ever wondered about the history that lies beneath your feet?

Recent excavation in the 300 block of Cooper Street, one of Camden’s most historically significant thoroughfares, unearthed these artifacts. The objects, both broken and whole, create a tableau of families, social and private lives, and economic activity long before the presence of Rutgers-Camden.

History lies ingrained in the layers of grime, cracks, and grooves of these artifacts. Once buried out of reach, they illuminate the cultural history of Cooper Street in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

American Material Culture, Rutgers-Camden, Spring 2018.
